“Ace Magashule is a definite no no no, the man will finish what is remaining of our movement. He will kill it.” This was a prophetic statement made by Fikile Mbalula ahead of the 2017 ANC’s 54th national conference. Mbalula was opposing the nomination of Ace Magashule as the preferred candidate for the Secretary-General position. It has been almost three years since Magashule took charge of Luthuli House affairs and it looks like Mbalula’s sentiment was spot on.
The latest decision by Magashule-controlled ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to reinstate the two highly implicated Limpopo officials back to their posts despite their alleged roles in the VBS looting just proved that the man is doing exactly what Mbalula feared. He is finishing what is left of the party’s moral fibre. While the ANC would like the public to believe that the NEC decisions are taken by the collective members of the structure, however, this is just proving to be far from the truth. Magashule has proven to be a man who influences all the decisions that the party take. It was him who was behind the appointment of dodgy characters like Mosebenzi Zwane, Bongani Bongo, Supra Mahumapelo and Faith Muthambi for the chairing of Parliament’s committees.
As if that was not enough to kill off the moral posture of the party, since the above-mentioned individuals were cogs in the Jacob Zuma/Guptas state capture project, Magashule-controlled NEC went on to elect them for those important positions in Parliament despite widespread opposition. Now, while the poor grannies in Limpopo are still seeking their monies following the looting of the now-defunct VBS bank by some of the politicians, which include among others some from the ANC, South African Communist Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters, Magashule-controlled NEC went on and reinstate the disgraced Danny Msiza and Florence Radzilani back into the ANC Limpopo executive positions.
One would have thought that after the Zuma’s disastrous years in charge of the party’s NEC and his(Magashule) corrupt and thuggery posture that has been his shadow even before he took over the highest office at Luthuli House, the man would have wanted to help the party regain its moral authority from the public it claims to be leading. However, Magashule continues to destroy the little moral authority that is left off the ruling party. Even if Mciza and Radzilani are not officially charged on the VBS looting as argued by Magashule and his clowns, the fact that they are highly linked to the theft of poor grannies’ pension money in the looting of the bank, this should make the party take a moral decision and distance itself from such characters.
But yet again, Magashule is also a man who has corruption allegations hanging over his head and to expect such a compromised character to uphold the highest moral principle will be similar to expecting the Guptas to present themselves before the Zondo Commission of inquiry into the state capture. By the time Magashule’s first term of office at Luthuli House ends, the ANC would have lost its complete moral authority and the full public trust.
